The Opportunity
As a dedicated Manager within the Life and Health Underwriting team, you will manage the daily operations of Life and Health Underwriting department for a variety of products to contribute to the achievement of financial objectives of the business. Manage employees (underwriters) who underwrite individual insurance applicants and who are dedicated to knowing our members, understanding their individual needs, and providing risk appropriate solutions. Develop employees through regular coaching and feedback that leads to improved results including establishing individual approval authority from $500K to $5 Million. Execute process improvements and lead organizational process changes.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
What you'll do:
- Select, develop, and support employees in fulfillment of our Corporate Mission, including establishment of individual approval authorities up to $5 mil.
- Manage employee performance and facilitate professional development and career progression, through effective coaching and feedback, leading to sound business results.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve operational effectiveness, through implementation and monitoring of processes and performance standards. Partners with Policy Team to create new Underwriting policies and procedures.
- Identifies and provides timely feedback for improvements to key stakeholders (e.g. Senior Leaders, Process and Product Owners).
- Achieve optimal productivity through managing workload volumes, staffing, training needs, and identifying and implementing appropriate solutions. Removes obstacles and champion change.
- Participate, coordinate and/or independently leads complex projects to include major system and process improvement initiatives.
- Respond to complex/sensitive customer Service complaints and questions in compliance with State Regulators as well as the National Association on Insurance Commission guidelines.
- Represent department on action teams and other decision-making forums.
- Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
- Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
- 6 years relevant experience with insurance products (selling, underwriting, issuing, servicing, or paying claims).
- 3 years of direct team lead, supervisory or management experience required.
- 2 years of experience in identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities and leading organizational change.
- Extensive knowledge of the function and department processes.
- Ability to analyze data, identify alternative solutions, and validate performance metrics.
What sets you apart:
- Strong people development skills
- Experience with Bestow Underwriting Workbench and/or Accenture Policy Administration system
- Expert experience in Excel and Microsoft Office
- US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $103,450- $186,210.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
