The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a dedicated Associate Attorney to participate in our SkillBridge Fellowship Cohort Program in our Legal and Advisory Services (L&A) organization and will be based at our Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX.
The SkillBridge Fellowship Cohort Program builds an extraordinary experience for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses that increase competitiveness and improve opportunities to find meaningful employment by providing development, skills, and exposure to corporate working environment and private sector business operations. SkillBridge Fellowship Programs are best-in-class workforce development programs that are cohort based and twelve weeks in duration.
In this role, you will be responsible for providing legal counsel to assigned clients within USAA. Analyzes legal issues of a routine and moderately complex nature and communicating legal advice. Engages with business clients to better understand USAA’s strategic and operational objectives. Collaborates with internal stakeholders within business units and the Legal and Advisory Services. Obtains general knowledge regarding relevant business, industry, and area of legal specialty.
The Legal and Advisory Services (L&A) Associate Attorney SkillBridge Fellowship is an immersive opportunity for early‑career Judge Advocate General (JAG) officers with approximately 3–6 years of legal experience. This 8–12-week fellowship, hosted within the financial services industry, provides hands‑on experience as in‑house corporate counsel while working alongside experienced legal professionals.
L&A advises USAA’s lines of business, corporate functions, and leadership across a wide range of legal areas, including banking, property and casualty insurance, life insurance, privacy, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, employment law, corporate governance, and government relations.
To qualify, candidates must be currently serving JAG officers in the U.S. Armed Forces and meet Department of Defense SkillBridge eligibility requirements. Candidates must be available to begin the SkillBridge Fellowship between June and August 2026 working onsite in San Antonio, Texas four days a week. If selected for the two‑year L&A JAG Fellowship, candidates must be available for full‑time employment with USAA as an Associate Attorney between September and November 2026 and commit to the full fellowship term. These timeframes may be slightly flexible based on individual circumstances.
What you’ll do:
Provides legal counsel to support business objectives and mitigate regulatory, compliance and litigation risk to USAA.
Leads routine to moderately complex legal assignments and delivers appropriate solutions.
Effectively communicates with internal stakeholders in both verbal and written forms.
Monitors and analyzes changes in laws, regulations and industry and advises organizational leadership of such changes as appropriate.
Supports senior attorneys with legal questions or issues by leveraging general knowledge and conducting research.
Ensures escalation of matters presenting more significant risk to more senior attorneys.
If awaiting bar licensure, assignments will be completed under the supervision of a licensed attorney. All legal advice will be provided by a licensed attorney.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you need to have:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school.
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required.
Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one state or a territory of the USA OR
Must pass the State Bar exam and receive a license to practice law within 10 months of hire date.
Proven ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Compensation Range: Hiring Our Heroes Fellows are paid by the HOH program. If selected for a full-time role, the salary range for this position is: $93,770.00- $179,240.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
