The Opportunity

We’re seeking a Technical Architect Staff to lead enterprise-scale digital experience modernization across web, mobile, and contact center platforms. This role drives technical strategy, architecture standards, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver seamless, scalable, and innovative member experiences. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership, influencing architectural decisions and mentoring teams while aligning technology with business objectives.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Architect and deliver multi-channel digital experiences (web, mobile, IVR) that serve millions of members and billions of monthly interactions.
  • Modernize enterprise APIs and services using REST, GraphQL, Golang, Spring Boot, and cloud-native patterns on AWS/OpenShift/Kubernetes.
  • Implement real-time and event-driven architectures (Kafka, AppSync) to enable responsive, personalized experiences.
  • Partner with product and design teams to ensure accessibility, usability, and performance across all digital touchpoints.
  • Integrate Adobe Analytics and other experience measurement tools to enable data-driven insights and personalization.
  • Define API-first strategies, microservices architecture, and integration patterns for enterprise-scale systems.
  • Establish engineering standards, development lifecycles, and testing practices to accelerate delivery and improve reliability.
  • Provide architectural guidance for AI/ML-driven personalization and data-informed decision-making frameworks.
  • Lead modernization efforts for legacy platforms, driving adoption of cloud-native technologies, service mesh, and reactive programming.
  • Prototype and deliver experience management frameworks leveraging Kubernetes, Snowflake, and vendor platforms for actionable insights.
  • Influence enterprise-wide technology decisions through governance boards and executive-level collaboration.
  • Mentor engineers and foster a culture of simplicity, reliability, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with product, data science, and operations teams to align technology with business outcomes.
  • Represent engineering in strategic forums; evangelize best practices and modernization strategies.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 10 years of experience in the Information Technology field to include at least 2 years in a technical leadership role within IT.
  • Experience in technology application development and/or infrastructure and operational implementation.
  • Deep knowledge in a minimum of one technology domain (from an application, infrastructure, operations, scalability, availability, performance, people, process, and tooling perspective).
  • Demonstrated experience in explaining complex technology decisions to both technical and nontechnical audiences at all levels in the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively communicating and developing high trust relationships with frontline and second level management and stakeholders.
  • Understanding and application of technical architecture standards, principles, and policies and knowledge of applicable regulations and risk management practices.

  • Hands-on experience modernizing APIs and services using REST, GraphQL, and cloud-native patterns (AWS, OpenShift, Kubernetes), with a strong understanding of API-first strategies and microservices architecture.
  • Deep knowledge of real-time and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, AppSync), enabling the creation of responsive and personalized member experiences.
  • Proficiency in cloud-native development and containerization technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, and service mesh.
  • Demonstrated experience with multiple programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Golang, Java/Spring Boot, React.js) for developing and enabling front-end solutions, showcasing adaptability and breadth of technical skill.
  • Strong track record of architectural influence, standards creation, and cross-team consultation, with experience in establishing engineering standards and development lifecycles.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-driven personalization frameworks and data-informed decision-making, including experience with data platforms like Snowflake.
  • Experience in technical leadership, mentorship, and driving cross-functional collaboration with product, data science, and operations teams to align technology with business outcomes.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $143,320.00 - $273,930.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
