The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Director, Attorney for insurance counsel team providing dedicated legal advice for the Western regional states (CA, AZ, NV, WA, HI, AK, ID, and NM).
As a dedicated Director, Attorney you will lead, develop, supervise and motivate a team of Legal professionals, including managing the day-to-day operations. Provides best-in-class legal, advocacy, and advisory services to the association or members in support of achieving its mission and goals, consistent with prevailing laws, and regulations. Develops and implements strategic, operational and tactical initiatives that support key business objectives. Identifies and implements best practices and procedures to enhance effectiveness and efficiency. Collaborates with Compliance and practice area leadership to ensure integration of legal advice and solutions. Ensures staff provides the highest level of service for internal clients or members. Participates and/or leads assigned programs and projects.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Tampa, FL, Phoenix, AZ, and Colorado Springs.

What you'll do:
Manages a team of Legal Professionals dedicated to providing support for internal clients. Provides legal counsel and services of a moderately complex to complex nature.
Applies broad or expert legal counsel within area of expertise to manage regulatory, compliance and litigation risk to USAA businesses. Oversees highly complex legal research to provide solution-oriented legal counsel to senior level business clients.
Develops and oversees execution of strategy/business plan for area of responsibility.
Engages and collaborates with other legal experts within the company and at times outside counsel.
Applies critical thinking to review complex and non-legal material for legal implications that may pose a risk to the organization. Produces clear and concise written materials appropriate for submission to senior level internal clients.
May prepare written legal positions involving highly complex and unique issues that require a high degree of independent legal thought and strategy for resolution.
May act as a legal point of contact and proactively partners with Compliance and the USAA businesses to mitigate legal compliance and legal risk. Keeps abreast of any changes in regulations and laws advising appropriate organizational leadership of such changes.
Advises senior executive management, to include executive council, on issues.
Leads cross-functional assignments in the development and implementation of key initiatives. Anticipates opportunities and potential solutions and leads team through the problem resolution process.
Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school required.
Admitted to the practice law in one state or a territory of the USA.
Active member and in good standing of the bar in at least one state or territory.
8+ years of experience practicing law within legal area of expertise.
3 or more years of direct team lead or management experience required.
Advanced understanding of the function/discipline and demonstrated application of knowledge, skills and abilities toward work products required.
Advanced level of business acumen in the areas of the business operations, industry practices and emerging trends required.
Ability to influence members of executive management and executive council.
What sets you apart:
- Demonstrated experience navigating multi-state insurance regulations, including deep knowledge of the regulatory landscape and familiarity with the 50-state regulatory model.
Experience managing or leading a team of attorneys handling insurance legal matters across jurisdictions, including legal talent development, coaching, and career development.
Skilled in allocating assignments, setting team priorities, and guiding escalations within legal frameworks.
Demonstrated experience overseeing day-to-day legal operations, including reviewing legal work, ensuring quality, and aligning workload with team capacity.
US military experience with skills related to one of the following MOS’s: Navy (Legalman (LN)), Marines (4402, 4405, 4406,4410, 4411, 4417), Army (27A), USAF (51JX / 5J0X1)
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $164,780 - $314,960.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
