The Opportunity

Are you a gem and jewelry expert with a passion for helping people? We're looking for a Claims Purchasing Agent to join our team! You'll be responsible for purchasing, strategically sourcing, and valuing a variety of beautiful jewelry, gemstones, and specialty items. You'll be a key player in our Property Claims department, making sure we get accurate replacement costs. Plus, you'll get to share your expertise by consulting with customers and members, guiding them through jewelry and gemstone replacements, reviewing damage reports, and providing accurate replacement cost valuations. We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based at the following location: San Antonio, TX.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Perform purchasing activities for the acquisition of products to maximize indemnity savings for the enterprise.

  • Facilitate replacement of jewelry and gemstones for members to include gemological quality control to confirm standards are met.

  • Proactively manage, evaluate, and maintain relationships with suppliers to ensure performance and compliance with established terms and business expectations.

  • Adhere to the compliance requirements involving suppliers of precious gemstones and metals.

  • Accountable for negotiating pricing, developing special terms and discounts for complex/specialized commodities and services.

  • Perform quality control on jewelry and gemstones to ensure items meet stringent standards before delivery to the member.

  • Analyze customer business needs and organizational goals to provide effective solutions.

  • Identify and resolve customer and member issues.

  • Advise and educate the members on the replacement process and alternative solutions.

  • Select and implement the most efficient instrument for acquiring specialized products and services with a focus on mitigating risk and liability to the enterprise.

  • Perform supplier market and commercial analysis, and product and commodity market research to identify high quality products at the best overall value.

  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures. ​

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree: OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • Minimum 4 years' experience in purchasing or sourcing jewelry and gemstones.

  • Current Gemologist or comparable Professional Gemologist certification.

  • Experience in procurement to include supplier relationship management, negotiation, and administration.

  • Experience inspecting and grading jewelry and gemstones.

  • Experience with purchase order and inventory management. ​

What sets you apart:

  • Minimum 4 years' relevant retail and/or buying experience in jewelry or high-end specialty products.

  • GIA Graduate Gemologist designation.

  • Jewelry manufacturing and quality control.

  • Jewelry appraising experience.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $69,920.00 - $125,850.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
