The Opportunity

This position can work remotely in the continental U.S. with occasional business travel.

The Climate Risk and Exposure Analytics team is situated in the Actuary & Analytics group within USAA’s P&C business. The team works closely with the Catastrophe Risk Management team and seeks to develop the associations long term strategy under a changing climate.

The director drives and builds the climate risk team that provides actionable insight and analysis to enable USAA to proactively manage catastrophe exposures and drive sustainable growth. Continuously strengthens and leverages the latest scientific advances and tools to enhance USAA’s understanding of how climate change will impact its business and develops strategies to support management of the evolving risk. Partners with key stakeholders in Catastrophe Management, Product Lines and Underwriting to develop decision useful climate adjusted analytics.

Leads and develops a highly analytical staff that provides decision support for business areas across the enterprise. By serving as a strategic partner to the business this function will be responsible for applying mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative /quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer business objectives and drive change.

What you’ll do:

  • As a strategic partner, leads or collaborates with other analytical leaders in executing the strategic direction of the business using mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative/quantitative analytical approaches.

  • Develops team reputation as highly skilled experts in the area of climate science support.

  • Oversees and coordinates analytical tasks which include the evaluation of the business problem, analytical methodology, validation, documentation and presentation of findings and recommendations.

  • Monitors, understands and embraces emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions.

  • Identifies additional resource needs ranging from IT investments, 3rd party support or additional analysts and provides business rationale and justification for additional needs.

  • Understands the business direction, environment and strategies, to set the analytic and climate risk direction of exploration and builds strategy to execute the approach that will influence business and drive change.

  • Leads the effort and/or partners with enterprise analytics teams to build USAA core analytics capabilities and processes.

  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, mentor and support, performance management, and managerial activities.

  • Assigns and or serves as a mentor for mathematical skills and statistical techniques for climate analysis and guides teams to use the appropriate approaches, to drive fact-based decision-making and strategy development.

  • Maintains and innovates knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

  • Researches and pursues the latest and/or industry leading practices in data and analytics, (Ex: Cloud, Data Mining, Python, Neural Networks, Sensor data, IoT, Streaming/NRT data) to advance the overall Climate Risk community knowledge.

  • Identifies opportunities to continue to learn in the data and analytics space, whether informal (E.g., Coursera, Udemy, Kaggle, Code Up, etc.) or formal (E.g. Certifications or advanced coursework).

  • Works with IT/CTO partners to advance new data and platforms that correspond to evolving skill sets.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science or other quantitative discipline; OR 4 years of related experience in statistics, mathematics or quantitative analytics (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 8 years of experience in a decision support analytic function OR advanced degree in relevant discipline, 6 years of experience in a decision support analytic function.

  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.

  • Demonstrates expert skills in mathematical and statistical techniques and approaches used to influence business strategy with fact-based decision-making to all levels of leadership up to senior executive levels.

  • Modernizes knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

  • Experience with new and emerging data sets, and incorporation (data wrangling, data munging) into new insights.

What sets you apart:

  • Deep understanding of climate change risk analysis and modeling. Strong understanding and familiarity with climate science, global and local climate models, and trends in natural weather perils.

  • Experience running a climate risk focused team, preferably within a financial services environment.

  • Desire to work in an innovative, start-up like environment, setting team direction and establishing and delivering on new processes.

  • Comfortable communicating analytical results, findings and solutions to senior leaders and executives.

  • Experience driving the development of a long-term view of exposure, given climate driven population migration and developing building standards.

  • Experience working with data representing future climate adjusted scenarios to adjust vendor catastrophe models, such as Verisk, KCC or CoreLogic.

  • Experience with geospatial analysis software.

  • Identifies opportunities to continue to learn in the climate change space, whether informal (E.g., Coursera, Udemy etc.) or formal (E.g. Certifications or advanced coursework, for example GARP SCR).

  • Experience with commonly used climate change scenarios, including IPCC and NGFS.

What we offer:

Compensation: The salary range for this position is: $164,780 - $296,610.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
