The Opportunity
As a dedicated Software Engineer Lead, you will serve as a QED Domain Lead supporting the Distribution & Service (D&S) organization. This is a strategic technical leadership role where you'll drive quality engineering transformation and DevSecOps process improvements across the software delivery lifecycle. You'll partner directly with business collaborators to deliver measurable outcomes in automation, cycle time reduction, cost savings, and defect containment while optimizing CI/CD pipelines, implementing DevSecOps standard methodologies, and leading all aspects of enterprise tooling adoption. In this role, you'll integrate security and quality early in the SDLC, enhance CI/CD pipeline automation, and implement tools and practices that streamline development workflows and improve code quality.
You'll design and lead the QE roadmap for the D&S domain, build and integrate enablers for domain-specific needs, and serve as the voice of QED in all collaborator forums. Working closely with development teams, you'll identify and eliminate bottlenecks, implement infrastructure as code solutions, lead technology assessments for new domains, and respond to requests from domain executive leadership. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on enterprise technology initiatives, combining strategic vision with hands-on DevSecOps and automation expertise to shape the future of software engineering and quality at USAA, modernizing development processes, accelerating continuous delivery, and ensuring robust, secure, and high-quality software solutions for the D&S organization.
Provides support to the Enterprise through delivering best in class technology solutions. Engaged in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle which include gathering and analyzing requirements, designing, testing, documenting, and implementing software, responding to outages.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, or Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
What you'll do:
Design, develop, code, and test complex tactical as well as strategic multi-functional technical solutions, often collaborating with Engineers or Architects outside of team/department.
Leads the team in in-depth code/design reviews and communicates updates and impacts to collaborators to ensure smooth daily operations and accurate planning for multiple teams.
Organize work and lead multiple teams to deliver features and solutions.
Independently resolves complex production issues and leads fixing of end-to-end solutions that span multiple applications and systems.
Mentor and coach junior / experienced engineers, including coaching of design principles for their teams and others
Work with architecture to help define directions for multi-functional or highly complex key and emerging technologies within a specific domain.
May begin advancing professional development through active participation in industry organizations, writing programming publications, pursuing educational opportunities, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
Employs Site Reliability Engineering practices in their domain.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you have:
Bachelor’s Degree or 4 additional years of experience beyond the minimum requirement can be used in lieu of a degree.
8 years of software development experience demonstrating depth of technical understanding within a specific discipline(s)/technology(s) to include 2 years demonstrated leadership driving enterprise technology projects or initiatives.
6 years of experience delivering technology solutions in all phases of the software systems and application development lifecycle.
Highly proficient in software engineering languages and tools; ability to develop on multiple platforms.
Knowledge and advanced experience of leading code/design reviews.
Demonstrated ability to address complex production issues by fixing applications and systems.
Ability to quickly understand applicable business insight to provide appropriate Engineering solutions.
Deep Understanding of one or more of the following: Java, Swift, Objective-C, Cobol, JavaScript, Kotlin, C++, HTML, CSS, SQL, Go, and Python
Demonstrated experience working with cloud technologies and tools.
What sets you apart:
Strong collaborator management skills with validated ability to partner with executive leadership and serve as a strategic advisor to line of business organizations
Consistent track record designing and accomplishing quality engineering roadmaps and transformation initiatives, or hands-on experience with CI/CD pipeline development and automation using Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, Azure DevOps, or similar platforms
Experience with test automation frameworks, DevSecOps practices, and integrating security and quality tools early in the SDLC
Strong background in either vendor/SOW management with third-party partners, or infrastructure as code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation, and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)
Programming/scripting proficiency in languages such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, Java, or JavaScript with ability to review code and implement automation solutions
Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud-native development practices
Demonstrated experience leading technology assessments, tool evaluations, and enterprise tooling adoption initiatives
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $127,310.00 - $243,340.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
