The Opportunity
As a dedicated Director, Model Risk Management reporting to the Head of Enterprise Model Governance, you'll be accountable for the development and mentoring of a high performing, cross-functional team that supports USAA’s Model Risk Management Program. You and your team will drive program design decisions, training, and stakeholder engagement across USAA’s Lines of Business and Staff Agencies in coordination with Model Risk leaders. This team also supports management oversight of the USAA’s Model Risk by orchestrating model risk committees and developing communications for business leaders, senior risk committees and the Board, as well as supporting and managing engagements with Internal Audit and regulators. Through this role, you will drive the sound use of Models across USAA to support the organization’s mission of empowering our members’ financial security.
We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Charlotte, NC, or Tampa, FL. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
What you'll do:
- Directs staff and initiatives that support risk management programs, to include governance support, risk oversight, risk infrastructure development, identification, quantification, and aggregation of key and emerging risks
- Builds and manages a high performing team of risk professionals through recruitment, training, coaching, performance management and related managerial activities.
- Directs teams in the development of risk dashboards and reporting formats in alignment with risk appetite/profile and leads teams in the identification, quantification and aggregation of risks using analytical methodologies.
- Reviews, communicates and recommends the development of risk policies and procedures in partnership with senior leaders to ensure appropriateness and adequacy versus industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Accountable for the development, implementation and oversight of risk management frameworks.
- Oversees the preparation of key reports and communications and may present to governance committees, senior leaders, regulatory bodies and the USAA Board of Directors.
What you have:
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or a related field; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required-12 years total) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
- 8 years of risk management, regulatory or operations experience in a relevant functional area to include banking, insurance, financial services, audit, project management, public accounting or other related operational area; OR advanced degree/designation in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or other subject area relevant to risk management and 6 years of work experience in a team relevant to risk management; OR PhD in Risk Management, Business, Finance, or other field relevant to risk management and 4 years of work experience in a subject area relevant to risk management.
- 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
- Advanced risk management experience in a complex institution and/or highly matrixed environment related to banking, insurance and/or financial services.
- Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution management and ability to effectively challenge at all levels of management and influence business outcomes.
- Experience leading and directing work with both internal and external partners in a highly collaborative environment.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and knowledge of data analysis tools and techniques and decision-making abilities, to include consistent track record to effectively make data-driven decisions.
- Proactively identifies potential concerns and follows-up to resolve issues.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel and PowerPoint.
What sets you apart:
- Experience in Model development, validation, or governance in accordance with Federal supervisory guidance on Model Risk Management (FRB 11-7 / OCC 2011-12).
- Experience in Enterprise Risk Management activities including Risk Appetite and Key Risk Indicator development and reporting and Enterprise Risk aggregation.
- Familiarity with the SAFe Agile approach to business application development.
- Ability to synthesize concise and clear communications about complex topics and concerns.
- Solid background using Tableau, Power BI, Snowflake / SQL or Python.
- US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.
Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $143,320.00 - $273,930.00.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
