Starting your transition will feel like entering unknown territory. Over 70% of military veterans shared the same sentiment, the good news is that you can take proactive steps to streamline the process. Although every military veteran goes through transition, every transition will be different.
The military runs on a consistent process, your transition should do the same. Set aside time to understand your long-term career goals and the steps you should take to accomplish them. Reflect on the choices you’ve made during service, how they will impact your future life, and take stock of the resources you have available.

Military veterans who have gone through transition can act as valuable mentors during your job hunt. Who can you connect with? Consider reaching out to veterans who have served with you in the past or introduce yourself through professional networking websites like LinkedIn. You can also meet mentors through smaller, more specialized organizations like America Corporate Partners (ACP), Veterati, USO, Hiring our Heroes, and FourBlock.
Transition means more than starting a civilian career. You’ll also reconnect with the everyday commitments of civilian life, which can call for restructuring how you see yourself and everyone around you. It’s natural to feel like you need more time. Remember, over 50% of military veterans say that their skills did not align with their first position.

One of the greatest challenges military veterans face when transitioning is explaining their skills to an audience that may not understand them. You’ll need to unlearn the jargon you picked up during service so that recruiters and future co-workers can understand what you bring to the table. For many employers, it’s not about what you did – but how you brought value to the group.

A resume is a tool. With it, you can deliver a digestible overview of your knowledge, skills, and abilities using key language found in the job posting description and requirements.

During the last six months of your military service, you can join the CFP in a host city around the country to start prepping for your next step. This 12-week program gives transitioning service members the skills they need to succeed in the civilian workforce.
