Purpose of Job

We are currently seeking a talented Policy and Performance Underwriter I (P&C Commercial Lines) for the San Antonio Home Office I or 100% Remote Work Environment.

The ideal candidate possesses an entrepreneurial spirit and excitement to be a part of USAA’s new Small Business Insurance underwriting team.

Develops, implements, and maintains P&C Underwriting policies and processes to achieve enterprise priorities, ensuring compliance with state regulations. Partners with internal stakeholders to develop, implement, and maintain P&C Underwriting policies and products. Participates in the development and implementation of team initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Applies intermediate knowledge of contracts, underwriting programs, guidelines, and processes.

  • Contributes to the development and implementation of business guidelines and strategies consistent with company policy and goals.

  • Researches, develops, and implements high quality business proposals that simplify, standardize, and automate processes meeting regulatory and policy requirements.

  • Monitors performance and recommends new solutions or changes to underwriting policies, programs, products and processes.

  • Resolves issues and navigates through obstacles to deliver work product.

  • Contributes to the development of underwriting educational programs/tools, training/mentoring messages, and/or communications for the delivery to internal and external audiences.

  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Contributes in projects or initiatives of medium scope for new and revised underwriting processes or solutions.

  • Implements, refines, and ensures effective execution of medium scope underwriting programs/projects that deliver value to our members while effectively managing risk, loss frequency, and rate integrity.

  • May serve as a SME.

  • Serves as a resource/SME to less experienced team members on routine issues.

  • Develops and monitors performance measurements to be used in auditing the performance of Underwriting programs, guidelines, and policies to ensure they are being executed appropriately.

  • Partner with the business, compliance, and risk areas to develop control plans and report on the results.

  • Contributes to strategies and communicates effectively with all key stakeholders.

  • Contributes in the development and cultivation of cross-functional business relationships with internal partners to collaborate on programs, guidelines and processes that meet regulatory requirements and align with USAA's strategic priorities and mission.

  • Point of contact for coordination of large scale initiatives that impact areas across the enterprise.

  • Provide direction and advice to less experienced employees who manage underwriting programs, guidelines and processes.

  • Contributes in encouraging an innovative spirit by researching industry trends and products, partnering with internal stakeholders to evaluate potential and current suppliers, to identify potential opportunities that will drive the company's competitive advantage.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • OR 4 additional years of related experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted in lieu of a Degree.

  • 4 or more years Experience in P&C, Project Management, Process Engineering, Supplier Management, or Channel Management

  • Proficient knowledge of relevant industry practices, trends, and regulatory requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Access; Data Analysis Tools; and any other applicable Internal/External System

Preferred Experience:

  • 4 or more years recent Commercial Lines Property & Casualty Underwriting experience.

  • Masters Degree or Completed Insurance Designation(s) such as CPCU, AINS, etc.

USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $54,800 - $98,700* (this does not include geographic differential it may be applied based on your work location)

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.

*Geographical Differential: Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average. 

Shift premium: will be addressed on an individual-basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
