The Opportunity
The Chief Legal Office (CLO) Internship is an immersive program within the financial services industry to learn from experienced legal professionals and gain hands-on-experience as an in-house corporate counsel. CLO advises USAA’s lines of business and leadership in all aspects of banking, property and casualty insurance, life insurance, privacy, cyber, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and government relations. The internship includes opportunities and skills development in legal research, risk and compliance management, communication, and time management. The opportunity may lead to selection in a legal development program opportunity following graduation and passing the bar exam. Internship placings may vary depending on business needs.

The internship is based at USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Interns offered an opportunity for a development program will work out of the San Antonio, TX home office.
What you'll do:
Responsible for providing legal counsel to assigned clients within USAA. Analyzes legal issues of a routine and moderately complex nature and communicating legal advice. Engages with business clients to better understand USAA’s strategic and operational objectives. Collaborates with internal partners within business units and the Chief Legal Office. Acquires general knowledge regarding relevant business, industry, and area of legal specialty.
- Provides legal counsel to support business objectives and mitigate regulatory, compliance and litigation risk to USAA.
- Leads routine to moderately sophisticated legal assignments and delivers appropriate solutions.
- Effectively communicates with internal partners in both verbal and written forms.
- Monitors and analyzes changes in laws, regulations and industry and advises organizational leadership of such changes as appropriate.
- Supports senior attorneys with legal questions or issues by using general knowledge and conducting research.
- Ensures critical issue of matters communicating more significant risk to more senior attorneys.
- If awaiting bar licensure, assignments will be completed under the supervision of a licensed attorney. All legal advice will be provided by a licensed attorney.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
What you need to have:
To qualify, you must be pursuing a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2025 internship will start on May 28, 2025, and last through August 8, 2025.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school.
- Currently pursuing a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Graduation date cannot be prior to August 08, 2025
- Validated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

What we offer:
Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location. The pay for this position is: $40 hourly.
Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.
